Kennedy Mitchum, a recent graduate of Drake University in Iowa was troubled by the dictionary meaning of racism. Her friends were grabbing the definition of racism from the dictionary to justify why their actions were not racist. Turned out the definition ignored the notion of systemic racism inherent in the society.
In a series of emails to Merriam-Webster she managed to convince them to update the definition to be inclusive and current with the times.
